Is That 08033 Home Really in Haddonfield? How to Check Before You Fall in Love

Some homes with a Haddonfield, NJ 08033 address sit in Haddon Township. Here's why it happens and the free official tools that tell you for sure.

By Live Haddonfield ·

A "Haddonfield, NJ 08033" address does not always mean the house is in Haddonfield Borough. The ZIP code runs past the borough line, so some homes with a Haddonfield mailing address actually sit in Haddon Township. If the town matters to you (and for schools and taxes, it does), check the tax record before you make an offer.

Why this keeps coming up

ZIP codes are a Postal Service thing. Town lines are a government thing. They don't always match.

The U.S. Postal Service lists Haddonfield as the preferred city name for 08033, according to ZIP data compiled by HometownLocator. The same data lists Tavistock as another place name tied to the ZIP. So a listing can say "Haddonfield" on the address line and still be somewhere else on the tax map.

We see this in our own listing checks. On Nov. 6, Redfin showed 410 Graisbury Ave with a Haddonfield mailing address, listed at $695,000 by Christy Oberg of Weichert Realtors-Haddonfield. The listing itself places the home in the Haddonleigh section of Haddon Township. That's why it didn't make our Haddonfield listings count. It might be a great house. It's just not a Haddonfield Borough house.

Why the town matters more than the ZIP

The municipality, not the mailing address, decides the stuff you'll live with every day:

  • Schools. Haddonfield Public Schools serve Haddonfield Borough. A Haddon Township home is in Haddon Township's district.
  • Property taxes. Each town sets its own rate. Same street name, different bill.
  • Zoning and permits. Haddonfield's rules, including the Historic District and the Zoning Board, apply only inside the borough.
  • Local services. Trash pickup, leaf collection and who you call at town hall all follow the town line.

How to check in five minutes

  1. Open the state's Property Explorer. New Jersey's property transparency page links to a free map search. It shows the municipality, block and lot, assessed value and prior year's taxes. Note that it reflects the tax list filed each January, so recent sales may not show yet.
  2. Or use Camden County's search. The Camden County Board of Taxation links to a Property Assessment Data Search Hub with owner, assessment and sales data by municipality.
  3. Ask the listing agent. A good agent will tell you the municipality and school district straight. Get it in writing if the town is a deal breaker.
  4. Read the listing remarks. Sometimes the answer is right there, like it was on Graisbury.

FAQ

Does a Haddonfield, NJ 08033 address mean the home is in Haddonfield Borough? Not always. The 08033 ZIP code reaches past the borough line, so some homes with a Haddonfield mailing address are in Haddon Township. Check the municipality on the tax record.

How do I confirm which town a New Jersey property is in? Look it up on the state's free Property Explorer or the Camden County Board of Taxation's property search, both of which list the municipality, block and lot.

Why does the town matter if the mailing address is the same? The municipality decides your school district, your property tax rate, your zoning rules and which local government you call.
