This Weekend
Sunday in Haddonfield, Nov. 8: Shakespeare Reading, Matinees and More
Sunday centers on a free Jacobean reading at the senior center and a Dragon Jr. matinee. Here is what still matters after a packed Saturday.
Sunday, Nov. 8, is the quiet half of a loud weekend. The Apocryphal Shakespeare Company reads a rarely staged Jacobean play for free at Mabel Kay. Haddonfield Plays and Players wraps How To Train Your Dragon Jr. with a 1:30 p.m. matinee. Dance Haddonfield fills Grace Church that night. If you already used our full weekend guide, this is the Sunday cut, plus one Friday playoff note.
Friday playoff note
Before the weekend schedule, a score that landed Friday afternoon: HMHS girls soccer blanked Sterling 5-0 in the South Jersey Group 2 quarterfinal at Haddonfield. Third-seeded Haddonfield is now 15-5-2. Phoebe Freedman scored twice; Kylie McKeever, Maisie Leckerman, and Reese Nastasi added goals. Next is a South Jersey Group 2 semifinal at home on Tuesday, Nov. 10, against the winner of West Deptford and Haddon Heights. Full football and Saturday soccer results wait for the Saturday scores piece.
Late Saturday leftovers, if you still need them
Saturday morning still has the Veterans Haven 5K and 1 Mile Walk at 9 a.m. at Christ the King, 164 Hopkins Ave. Proceeds support Veterans Haven South. Details sit in our Veterans Day guide. Boys soccer vs. Cedar Creek is also Saturday at 10 a.m. at Haddonfield. Songs, Supper and Stand-Up at Grace Church is Saturday evening. None of those are Sunday events. They are the Saturday leftovers readers still ask about on Friday night.
Sunday afternoon: Dragon Jr., then Shakespeare
How To Train Your Dragon Jr., 1:30 p.m., at Haddonfield Plays and Players, 957 E. Atlantic Ave. OnTheStage lists the Sunday matinee as the last show of the Nov. 5 to 8 run. Tickets and other fall shows are in our theater roundup.
Apocryphal Shakespeare Company: The Second Maiden's Tragedy, 2 to 4 p.m. (doors 1:30), at the Mabel Kay Senior Center, 24 Walnut St. Free staged reading. Only one handwritten Jacobean manuscript of the play survives. Most scholars now credit Thomas Middleton; a few still argue for Shakespeare's lost Cardenio. The library takes reservations through its event page. Book a seat before you walk over.
The two afternoon shows overlap. Pick the dragons or the ghost story. You cannot do both at curtain time.
Sunday evening: Dance Haddonfield
Dance Haddonfield, 6 to 10 p.m., Grace Church Parish House, second floor, 19 East Kings Highway. Intermediate Hustle runs 6 to 6:45. Beginner West Coast Swing runs 6:45 to 7:30. Social dancing fills 7:30 to 10. Cost is $15 for the full evening, or $10 if you skip the intermediate lesson. No advance registration. Come single or with a partner. The group's site lists Nov. 8 on the schedule and says it closes only for severe weather, Christmas, and New Year's.
Next week, briefly
Dragons After Dark Mahj 101 is Tuesday, Nov. 10, 6 to 8 p.m. at Sparrow's, 10 Mechanic St. Tickets are on Eventbrite. It is next week, not this weekend. Put it on the calendar if mahjong is your thing.
Sunday in Haddonfield does not need a packed list. It needs the two shows people will regret missing, a place to dance after dinner, and a clear Friday score so the sports board makes sense. For a short Friday rundown without digging, subscribe to the newsletter.
